Ballooning Over Cappadocia
August 16, 2013
Hot air balloons fly over Cappadocia's unusual landscape as the sun rises in central Turkey.
Hundreds of hot air balloons take flight every dawn to see the region’s extraordinary landscape.
Ancient volcanic eruptions blanketed this region with thick ash, which solidified into a soft rock. Wind and water went to work on this plateau, leaving only its harder elements behind.
The landscape is honeycombed with networks of ancient underground settlements, some still inhabited to this day.
Thousands of tourists and locals take to the skies every morning during the summer to see the spectacular views of this world heritage site as the sun rises.
